BEDMAS & fractions

Order of Operations

o Why is order important in mathematics?

To keep answers the same from person to person

o BEDMAS

Brackets inside out
Exponents
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction

Fractions

Â· Multiplying fractions

o If they are proper fractions convert to improper fractions

o Multiply the numerator by numerator and denominator by denominator

o Reduce the fraction and convert to a mixed (proper)

Â· Dividing fractions

o Convert to improper fractions

o Invert and multiply

o Reduce and convert

Â· Adding and subtracting fractions

o Convert to improper fraction

o Find the lowest common denominator if not immediate multiply together both num and dem need to be multiplied by the same number(like multiplying by 1) must be done to both sides (with different values)

o Add and subtract on the numerator only!!!

o Reduce and convert

Â· Fractions and cross multiplying

o Some times we are asked to solve an unknown when dealing with fractions

o If there are two fractions and one equal sign we can use cross multiplication
